PFLAG Pendleton growing and educating the Eastern Oregon Region!! February 12th, 2011 | Editorials, Events, Uncategorized | No Comments »

Its been a while since we have posted on PFLAG Pendleton but that is going to change. Just because we weren’t posting to the site doesn’t mean that things weren’t happening in our community and state. From now on this webpage will be a place where folks can get the latest and most informative information regarding Equality in Eastern Oregon.

Over the last two years PFLAG (Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Pendleton has grown to 50 members strong. This group of Umatilla County residents continually strive to educate, support and advocate for the GLBTQ community, their family and friends.  Our projects this year are focused on Marriage Equality and the importance of all loving committed couples being able to participate in Civil Marriage.  Basic Rights Oregon will make a decision this fall based on extensive research whether or not to put Civil Marriage for Same Gender Couples on the ballot for the 2012 election. The work behind this decision has been extensive and the results are surprising and promising!!! Did you know that 32% of all Oregonians already believe that same gender couples should be allowed to participate in Civil Marriage??? Yes, one third of our fellow Oregonians are already open and accepting!!

In cooperation with Basic Rights Oregon PFLAG Pendleton has placed a 1/2 page, full color Marriage Equality ad in the East Oregonian.  Our ad will appear on Sunday, February 13th, Valentine’s Eve.  It will contain 191 signatures of local citizens who stand with PFLAG Pendleton and BRO (Basic Rights Oregon) in supporting Marriage for same gender couples.  We hope this ad will help promote the conversations that must take place for people to understand the discrimination and injustice that  occurs when only heterosexual couples are allowed to marry. The process of gathering signatures actually began in May of 2010 and through Marriage Matters workshops, tabling events at the Farmer’s Market and other venues, Out in the Silence film documentary screenings and just one on one conversations with friends and family members the names were collected.  PFLAG Pendleton now has a wonderful data base of like minded folks that they can go to for assistance in future events.
